About EBI
What is East Bay Insomniac?
East Bay Insomniac is a place to search for food, beverages, events and more that are open until midnight or later. We’re currently always under construction as I add more content. To qualify for our site, a late-night establishment must:
- be located in the East Bay (Berkeley, Oakland, Emeryville, El Cerrito, Albany and Alameda are our main coverage areas)
- be open for business at least until midnight (preferably later), at least 2 nights a week (preferably more)
Exceptions can be made for places offering a unique service until 10PM or 11PM. I’d love to get a barber on here.

A Short History of East Bay Insomniac
In the beginning, there was this blocky HTML website:

The year was 2003. I was still in my twenties. For a college town, Berkeley went to sleep early. But I didn’t. Sometimes I didn’t go to sleep at all. Mostly I listened to music and wrote. Sometimes I got hungry. East Bay Insomniac was a project to ID places to get food after 10PM.
Flash forward to 2007. I turned thirty. In between, there was a cubicle and a commute. There was stress. There were sleep aids. There was the health-conscious concept of not eating after 8PM. East Bay Insomniac languished. Many places on EBI V1.0 closed or reduced their hours.
Now it’s almost 2009. There is a renaissance of late-night activity in the East Bay. My cubicle and commute are gone again. I don’t want to go back. Please click an ad on the site or link to us and keep the dream alive awake.
