Spider

Martha took this picture of  Big Mama Spider outside my house the other day. This evening I caught this headline from Agence France-Presse, a global news agency, which was probably having a slow day: “In sex life of jumping spiders, size matters. Intrigued, I read on:

“PARIS (AFP) - From post-coital cannibalism to love at first sight, the sex life of the African jumping spider is full of surprises, according to a new study.”

Gold star to Marlowe Hood, because that is journalistic dynamite right there. Click here for the full story.

The short (pun forthcoming) version of the piece is that virgin female spiders are attracted to “meatier males,” but experienced (don’t call them sluts) spiders seek out shorties! My girlfriend is more mature than me, and I’m shorter than statistics suggest, so I found this Yahoo! headline a touching parable of sorts. Speaking of touching, scientists speculate that sophisticated spiders select soulmates of succinct stature to…”reduce the risk of being eaten as a post-sex snack.” And they say romance is dead.

Fancy a bite/My appetite/Yum yum gee it’s fun/Banging on a different drum…/Your love is so edible to me/I eat cannibals. (Name that band)
